Hm. [He watches Buttons curiously, then holds out his hand, resting it on Sally's leg in front of Buttons. Seeming to realize that his hand is on her leg, he pulls it back like her leg's a hot stove before Buttons can hop on.] I, uh... sorry.
[He's still got Rhino in his other hand though; don't worry.]
[ she gives him a look at his sharp reaction, some mix of amused and bemused, then scoops the hedgehog up with both hands. ] Here, I'll just... [ she releases buttons in john's hand next to rhino. the tiny hedgehog scoots up next to her slightly-larger buddy. ] Y'know, save you a heart attack.
You were reaching for a hedgehog. I'm thinking 'befriending woodland creatures' is about as harmless as it gets. [ calm down, john. it's not like she doesn't invade your space arbitrarily. ]
[He laughs and settles, watching the hedgehogs for a moment.
Now would be a perfect opportunity to tell her about the drug. He could confide in her and he could stop, stop these memories and sleepless nights and killer migraines.] Sally...
[He hesitates, then chooses not to.] I think they fell asleep.
I guess that just means you're stuck here until they wake up. [ she says simply. there was something off about the way he said 'sally', but not off enough to push it. ]
[He smiles and nods] Not a bad place to be stuck, but my arm's falling asleep.
[He leans past Sally and sets them gently on her pillow. He seems to realize how close he is to Sally and glances down at her, a smile playing on his lips.] Not a bad place at all. Hi.
[He reaches up with a hand and caresses her cheek. It's soft, gentle gesture. He wants to kiss her. He really does. But he doesn't want to be presumptuous.
Instead he kisses her cheek again, lingering a little, murmuring] You're pretty wonderful, you know that?
[ since he does linger, she lets her head drop just slightly so the side of her forehead rests lightly against his, eyes slipping closed. ] I did not, actually. [ it's casual enough, maybe even almost a quiet sort of teasing, so he'd be hard-pressed to figure that part of her means it. ]
[He looks up at her in quiet adoration. He really isn't sure what he would do if she disappeared, just poofed at the jump like Aidan. She's quickly become one of his best friends and something a little more.
He lets his lids drop closed, enjoying the closeness.] Glad I told you, then.
[ she's not going anywhere. she refuses. she's got too many people here now, not to mention she couldn't leave josh alone in this mess. so this place is just gonna have to deal with her for a while, sorry to say.
[He shifts a little, but his position doesn't change much, just enough for him to open his eyes and touch her cheek.] Can I confess something? Not a love confession, I promise.
[ oh god, way to break her heart. her face crumples a little, and her arms lift to wrap around his shoulders and behind his neck, not technically pulling him any closer but she may as well be. ]
Y'know, I know the feeling, [ she says, because not gonna lie, she's been pretty lonely too - no matter how she tries to fix it. ]

Me too. I have no idea what I'd do without them. [ john included, by now. ]

[ buttons gives a quiet squeak and abandons her napping spot, wandering casually down sally's leg, but sally's not too concerned. ]

Just... trying not to be too forward.
[Petting the hedgehogs so he doesn't have to look at her while saying that.]

[And, god, he's been so lonely. Back home, here. It's nice to have someone to be close to, to let go around.]
